It is quite obvious that our postmodern culture is trying to redefine marriage. It is no longer the traditional marriage between one man and one woman. Under the umbrella of, Love is Love, the world has embraced polygamy, paedophilia, transgenderism, homosexuality and many other sexually immoral behaviours and lifestyles.

The problem is that there’s a lot of misinformation and confusion out there when it comes to homosexuality and gender identity. As Christians we ought to speak the truth in love and do this in a way that shows respect for the people we differ with. We give the reasons supported by evidence, not just the rules. So, what is the biblical truth about homosexuality?

The Bible does not say that homosexuality is the worst sin ever. Instead, it’s one of a bunch of sins that many of the rest of us are often guilty of too. It also does not say we can’t have friends that are homosexual. It’s not our job to look down in a judgmental way on non-believers. We know from Genesis chapter 1 verse 27 that everyone is made in the image of God. That makes them special to God, and they should be special to us too.

Some people claim that Jesus never said anything on the issue. But that’s not completely true. In Matthew chapter 19 verse 4 and 5, Jesus says, Have you not read that he who made them at the beginning made them male and female, and said, For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh? So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, let not man separate. Jesus makes it clear that God had a perfect plan from the beginning.

In Genesis chapter 2 verse 22, we read, And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept, and he took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh in its place. Then the rib which the Lord God had taken from man he made into a woman, and he brought her to the man. So, God made woman, Eve, as a suitable mate for man, Adam, his perfect, God-given complement. God’s plan is this, in marriage, one man and one woman, become one flesh for one lifetime.

Marriage is one of the seven sacraments of the Church, where the Holy Spirit unites the couple and make them one flesh. As Saint Paul says in Ephesians chapter 5 verse 32, that the union between a man and his wife is a living symbol of the unity of Christ with his people, the Church. We also notice that Jesus started his ministry by turning water into wine in the wedding of Cana of Galilee. He is affirming that the family is the foundation of his perfect plan for his creation.

However, things started to go wrong when people refused to live the godly way and adopted many other immoral lifestyles. The Bible from cover to cover condemns these behaviours.
